Doncaster’s fabulous February continued on Tuesday night as the Dragons beat Fitzroy 4-3 in a hard-fought contest at Deep Creek.
The Dragons trailed for most of the game before taking the lead in the sixth inning of the seven-inning contest.
The three-game winning streak since February 1 looked in jeopardy when the Lions led 3-0 in the fifth inning, with the Doncaster offence held in check by Fitzroy stalwart Brock Pawley.
But things started to turn around in the bottom of the fifth inning. Luke Utting reached on error, Brendan McDonald walked, and both advanced on Dakota Gibson’s groundout. A wild pitch, followed by a sacrifice fly by Nic Unland, reduced the deficit to 3-2.
Doncaster tied it up in the sixth inning when Matt Josselyn produced the biggest hit of the night, an RBI double that scored Rolando Curiel. Utting followed with a single to put his team in front.
Relief pitcher Brian Chen, who had entered in the fifth inning, closed it out to give the Dragons their fourth consecutive win.
Earlier, starting pitcher Daniel McGrath was dominant through three innings, allowing just one base runner and no runs while striking out five.
“We weren’t at our best but good teams find a way to win and that’s what we did,” McDonald said.
To build on the winning streak, Doncaster will have to beat third-placed Upwey Ferntree Gully at Deep Creek on Saturday, starting at 4pm.
