A stellar pitching performance by Matt Josselyn and solid batting throughout the lineup carried the Doncaster Dragons to victory over Werribee at Deep Creek on Saturday.

The Dragons won 11-1 on a day in which every player in the starting lineup reached base at least twice.

“A pretty complete performance,” coach Brendan McDonald said.

“Matt was outstanding, Dakota [Gibson] was excellent behind the plate, and we had great at-bats all day.

“We scored in four of our six offensive innings and left the bases loaded in another. We can be a really tough lineup to pitch to, and we definitely showed that today.”

Josselyn led the way, pitching a complete seven-inning game and allowing just one run, with eight strikeouts and one walk.

That run gave the Giants a first-inning lead, but the Dragons tied it up in the second as Jean Alvarado doubled, went to third on a groundout and scored after Luke Utting walked and was caught in a rundown.

After that, it was all one-way traffic as the Dragons added three runs in the third inning and never looked back, wrapping up the game in seven innings thanks to the 10-run rule.

The offence combined for 11 hits and 11 walks, with Nic Unland, Billy Findlay, Brian Chen and Marcel D’Avoine each collecting two hits. The key hit of the game was Findlay’s two-out triple in the third inning, which gave the Dragons the lead.

Any chance of a Werribee comeback was snuffed out in the fifth inning, when Doncaster added five runs on four hits and three walks, with Unland’s two-run double the highlight.

On Tuesday night the Dragons head to Geelong to take on the Baycats, with the first pitch set for 7pm.
