The Reserves punched their ticket to the playoffs with a thrilling walk-off win over Ringwood, while the Thirds secured top spot with a comprehensive victory in the final round of the regular season on Saturday.
In a see-sawing battle for fourth spot, the Doncaster Reserves jumped out to a 6-0 lead as John Britton held Ringwood scoreless through four. But the Saints plated three runs in the fifth and rallied for six more in the seventh to hold a 9-7 advantage heading into the bottom of the final frame.
With their season on the line, a string of quality at-bats closed the Dragons’ deficit to 9-8 before Jamie Bastian delivered a two-RBI double that saw coach Tom Burgoine cross the plate for the winning run.
The come-from-behind win set up a semi-final clash between Doncaster (9-5-3) and third-placed Essendon (9-4-4) at Boeing Reserve this Saturday, with first pitch slated for 1.30pm. The Dragons defeated the Bombers 10-4 in their only match-up this season.
At Tom O’Halloran Field, the Thirds put the finishing touches on an impressive regular season with a 13-5 win over St Kilda. Having finished on top with a 13-2-2 record, the Dragons will host second-placed Forest Hill (11-2-4) in this week’s semi-final at Deep Creek from 1.30pm.
The Firsts will conclude their season against Forest Hill this Sunday following a 3-0 loss to Ringwood that officially ended their playoff chances, while the Fourths finished outside the top four after a 9-0 loss to Monash Uni.
