After a short break between seasons the MWBL Winter season kicked off over the weekend.
The opening round of the 2024 MWBL season was a mixed bag for the Dragons, with the Firsts and Seconds both falling to Greenhills-Montmorency while the Thirds and Fourths secured comprehensive home wins over Knox.
Kicking off the season with grand final rematch against GMBC, last year’s A-Grade premiers started the game in style. Designated hitter Brendan McDonald led off with a four-pitch walk and when third-baseman Marcel D’Avoine’s high drive cleared the wall in right-centrefield moments later the Dragons led 2-0 before an out had been recorded.
A double by McDonald was the only other hit Doncaster could muster the rest of the way, as Monty’s pitchers applied the clamps and the offence – led by a two-homer game from veteran Ryan Booth – piled on runs late en route to a 13-2 win.
The Reserves, coming off a premiership triumph of their own, lost 9-3.
Jasper Steele twice cleared the cones and Tom Ervin also left the yard as the Thirds claimed a first-up victory over Knox at Gilbert Park, while the short-handed Fourths went home happy after a 9-2 win despite having just seven players.
